Alaska Agriculture: Land of the Midnight Sun and Monster Veggies
When most people think of Alaska, they picture snow, mountains, and moose — not massive veggies. But thanks to incredibly long summer days (up to 20+ hours of sunlight!), Alaskan farmers hold world records for giant produce like 138-pound cabbage, 65-pound cantaloupes, and 35-pound broccoli.
That sunshine supercharged photosynthesis, leading to explosive plant growth in a short season. It’s just one of the many hidden agricultural gems of the 49th state.
Gardening & Planting Tips: Last Frost Dates by State
If you’re itching to get your garden growing, timing is everything. Knowing your region’s average last frost date helps prevent heartbreak from a surprise cold snap.
Here are the typical last frost dates for three states we’ve been asked about:
North Dakota
- Average Last Frost: May 15 – May 30
-
Great for: Cold-hardy crops early, warm-season plants after June 1
Pennsylvania
-
Average Last Frost: April 15 – May 10
-
Tip: Use cloches or row covers for early planting in cooler parts
North Carolina
-
Average Last Frost: March 20 – April 15
-
Note: Coastal regions thaw first; mountain zones stay frosty longer
Always check your local county extension office or use a frost date tool online for more precise info.
Tick Warning: Protect Your Pets and Family This Spring
Ticks are hatching now across many regions, and we learned that the hard way. Our beloved border collie, Naked, picked up 12 wood ticks in one afternoon — and we suspect she found a nest.
Ticks thrive in damp, grassy areas and can carry Lyme disease and other illnesses. Here’s what you can do:
- Check your pets daily, especially around ears, paws, and belly
- Use vet-approved flea & tick prevention (spot-ons, collars, or chewables)
- Treat your yard with natural or chemical repellents
- Wear light-colored clothes and tick repellent outdoors
- Shower and check your body after hiking or yardwork
Travel Hack: Pack a Throwaway Tote (Your New Favorite Carry-On)
Want to streamline your airport game? Here’s a travel hack that works every time: bring a cheap, foldable grocery-style tote bag as your personal item.
Why it works:
- Super lightweight, even when full
- Easy to pack in your main bag until you need it
- Not bulky or “purse-like,” so even men don’t mind carrying it
- Works great for snacks, chargers, books, or post-flight errands
If TSA or gate agents question it, it’s clearly a bag with handles — and it looks casual. Bonus points for using one with a fun print!
