Dog Training Starts with Boundaries — Use a Natural “Growl”

Teaching your dog or puppy respect early in life creates a well-mannered companion. One of the simplest and most natural ways to set those boundaries is by using a growl.

Why Putting a “Handle” on a Puppy Early Matters

Training starts with structure. A “Handle” means being able to confidently control your dog with a simple word, sound or gesture. At a young age, dogs are still developing their sense of boundaries, pack order, and authority. Without guidance, they can become confused or unruly — leading to behavioral problems later.

Just as a mother dog uses a growl to correct her pups, you can mimic this same method. It doesn’t require shouting or physical discipline. A low, firm growl when your dog misbehaves is often enough to get their attention and correct the action.

  • It’s Natural: Dogs instinctively understand vocal tones.

  • It Commands Respect: They learn to pause and think before repeating the behavior.

  • It Sets Boundaries: Your dog understands that you are the pack leader.

Tip: This isn’t all about control, but more being able to give direction and focus. Guide them gently, and reinforce positive behavior with calm praise.

Weather Aware – Tornado Season 2025 is Breaking Records

Storm season is already proving to be one of the most dangerous in recent history. If you’re at home or camping, understanding your risks and having a tornado plan can save lives.

Record-High Tornado Counts in 2025

As of June 30, 2025, the U.S. has recorded 1,296 preliminary tornado reports — that’s 338 more than the 10-year average of 958. This surge places 2025 as the most active tornado season in over a decade, even surpassing the fierce storms of 2024.

  • Iowa: Dropped from 100 tornadoes in June 2024 to just 16 this year.

  • North Dakota: Saw a sharp increase — from only 2 in June 2024 to 34 in June 2025.

Are Campgrounds Required to Have a Tornado Shelter?

Generally, no. Most campgrounds are not required by law to provide designated tornado shelters. Local ordinances may differ, but many sites still rely on bathhouses or common buildings for protection — often not enough in a direct hit.

Staying Safe When Camping During Tornado Season

Check-In: Always ask if the campground has a storm shelter. If not, check the bathhouse structure. Cinder block buildings are better than tents, but not foolproof.

Plan Ahead: Have a simple, easy-to-follow emergency plan. Make sure everyone in your group knows where to go and what to do.

Know the Limits:

  • Tents: Can typically withstand up to 30 mph winds.

  • RVs: May endure up to 75 mph, but can flip or be crushed.

  • Cabins and Cars: Not tornado-proof. Flying debris can still penetrate.

According to KOA: If a tornado is nearby, evacuate to a storm shelter immediately. Your tent or RV won’t protect you. Reference: https://koa.com/campgrounds/wakeeney/blog/guide-to-camping-during-a-tornado_b77eb6d8-45ed-42c3-b5ab-5921b4fe6fa3/

Tornado WATCH vs. Tornado WARNING — Know the Difference

  • Tornado WATCH: Conditions are favorable for tornadoes. Stay alert.

  • Tornado WARNING: A tornado is happening or imminent. Act immediately to seek shelter.
