Season 6, Episode 303

Nostalgia has a funny way of coming back around. From building LEGO sets at the kitchen table to choosing a favorite haircut from a magazine, many of the things we remember from childhood and young adulthood are finding new life today. Some are returning simply because they’re fun, while others offer surprising benefits in a world dominated by screens and digital distractions.

LEGO for Adults: Building Our Way Back to Childhood

LEGO isn’t just for kids anymore. Adult LEGO sets have become a popular pastime for people looking for creativity, relaxation, and a satisfying break from everyday routines.

Why LEGO Is Good for More Than Nostalgia

Beyond the childhood memories, working with small LEGO pieces requires hand-eye coordination, concentration, and fine motor skills. For older adults, hands-on activities that encourage dexterity can be an enjoyable way to keep the fingers moving as we age.

My (Rebecca Wanner aka BEC) personal experience for wellness, was putting together many Lego Botanical flower bouquets. The Legos kept my fingers moving, allowed for deep concentration, and the ability to relieve stress.

Goodbye, Columbia House: Remembering the Era of Mail-Order CDs

Columbia House, the storied mail-order club that offered 12 CDs for a penny and transformed the way Americans listened to music, announced it will be shutting down after 71 years. The company has announced that as of Sep. 16, it will no longer accept new orders.

Grandma and Analog Hobbies Are Having a Moment

Traditional hands-on crafts like crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, and scrapbooking are dominating free time as a therapeutic screen antidote.

Crafting stores are making it even simpler too and fun by offering kits for youth and novice to make their own crochet animals, fun needlework that can be framed or embroidery that could be applied to accessories.

Hands on building sets such as model trucks to other fun projects are also popping up. Check your local hardware stores and lumber yards for these kits that are geared to encourage working with hands, following instructions and learning the reward of building something oneself!
